What is a range breakout strategy?

How often does it trade?

Breakout systems are low frequency by nature — they wait for a qualified break rather than trading continuously. Expect quiet days with no trades at all.

Does the server timezone matter?

Yes. Session ranges are measured in broker server time. If you change brokers, check that the EA's time settings still line up with the sessions you intend to trade.

How range breakout trading works

Markets spend much of the day inside a defined range — typically the quiet hours before a major session opens. A breakout system maps that range, then trades the move when price leaves it with conviction, on the premise that the session open brings the volume needed to sustain a directional move.

The difficulty is false breaks. Price pushes a few points past the boundary, triggers the entry, and snaps straight back. Every serious breakout system therefore needs some form of qualification — a filter on how price left the range, how wide the range was, what time it happened, and how wide the spread is at that moment — and a stop-loss placed from the moment of entry.

Why breakout systems suit evaluation accounts

Trade frequency is naturally low: one range, one session, a limited number of setups.
Entries and stops are defined by structure, so risk per trade is knowable in advance.
Positions are usually intraday, which limits exposure to overnight gaps and swap costs.

Low frequency cuts both ways: fewer trades means results are lumpier over short periods, and an evaluation with a tight time limit can end before the strategy has had many opportunities.

Before you run it on a funded account

Confirm your firm permits Expert Advisors and check its rules on news trading and on holding positions over the daily reset. Match the EA's risk setting to the firm's daily loss limit with a safety buffer — leave room so that a normal losing day cannot put you near the breach line.
